SCORE

By Mary Lou Vande Hey, SCORE Volunteer

In conjunction with Fox Communities Credit Union, the SCORE Fox Cities chapter is celebrating Small Business week and their 40th anniversary!  As the economy is turning up and the skilled labor market tightening, it’s time to pause and honor small business owners who have worked hard to establish themselves and serve the community.  Feature small businesses will be:

Whistler’s Knoll

Tom and Holly Boettcher have created a charming vineyard in Hortonville WI.  In the fall of 2011, Tom and Holly purchased 13 acres of land in the township of Hortonia.  An 1800’s dairy barn was renovated into a unique tasting room, winery and event venue.  Along with year round events, visitors can enjoy a glass of wine as they walk through Holly’s Wine Garden of meticulously landscaped flowers and plants enjoying summer’s birds and butterflies. Tom started making wine as a hobby in their home and went on to study viticulture & enology through the University of Missouri.

Appleton Tutoring Services LLC

Starting at the age of seven, Hamid Almozaffar learned the discipline of Judo so instructing became second nature.  Hamid started tutoring students for the ACT exam as a hobby while working full time in the corporate world. This tutoring hobby grew organically through word of mouth and turned into a second job. During the winter of 2014, he had to make a decision- either continue working in the traditional roles we've all imagined during our youth and quit tutoring or continue supporting the success of our future.  In January of 2015, a passion flourished into a business.  Appleton Tutoring Service has grown from 1 employee to 6 tutors. While still focused on ACT prep, they also do subject specific tutoring for K-12th grade in math, reading and writing.

Recyclist Bicycle Company

Lora Glasel and Sean Wardall’s bicycle shop is located between Appleton and Green Bay right on the CE Trail in Kaukauna, WI.  The Recyclist Bicycle Company has a full-time staff 12 months a year specializing in road, mountain, fat tire, comfort, cross, hybrid, kid's, cruiser, fixie and electric assist. Their highly trained technicians offer specialized repair services such as wheel builds, customizations, complete overhauls, and are the only shock service center in the area. Their services include pick up, delivery and in-home repairs, different types of group rides, including a female only group ride and classes such as mechanic clinics, women's repair clinics and riding clinics year round.

Owner Cindy Nelson-Singh coaches business professionals who are highly motivated to develop their personal and leadership character virtues and become highly effective role models at home, work and in our community. In addition to having a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and an extensive background in working with business leaders and their human resources, Cindy has obtained advanced certifications in Spiritual Life Coaching and Self-Mastery Teaching.

All Seasons Coffeehouse LLC

Tucked away just behind the Fleet Farm gas station off Bluemond and Wisconsin Avenue on the west side of Appleton, you will find the recipient of the 2014 “Favorite Hidden Gem” award. To help you locate them, All Seasons has a 7 x 7 foot coffee cup on the corner of their roof.  Known for “from-scratch” drinks and eats and a cozy atmosphere, Liz Stuck has been up and running for almost two and a half years. In 2015 they expanded their service with the “Pies & Pours” truck.  You can find them at picnics, weddings and corporate events but routinely at the Downtown Appleton Farm Market.

Celebrate our small businesses and SCORE’s 40th anniversary on Tues May 3rd at Liberty Hall in Kimberly WI 6:00 – 9:00pm (5:00 registration).  Register online at www.foxcities.score.org  (no charge) or call 920-734-7101.
